Couples Counselling
Couples counselling provides a space for partners to work through challenges in their relationship with support from a counsellor. Sessions can focus on a specific concern or on broader difficulties that have developed over time.
You may be looking for support after a difficult period, trying to reconnect, or wanting to understand what has been happening between you. Couples counselling can provide an opportunity to address these concerns together.
You May Be Here Because...
Relationships can go through difficult periods for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a specific issue that has brought you to counselling. Other times, it can feel like the relationship has gradually become more difficult without knowing exactly how you got there.
You may be:
Having the same arguments or disagreements over and over
Feeling disconnected or distant from one another
Struggling to communicate without conversations becoming tense or shutting down
Feeling misunderstood, unheard, or alone in the relationship
Finding it difficult to express your needs or understand your partner's
Experiencing changes in intimacy or closeness
Working through a breach of trust or another significant relationship rupture
Adjusting to a major life change or transition
Unsure how to move forward after a difficult period
Wanting to strengthen your relationship even though things are generally going well
What We Can Work On
The focus of couples counselling will depend on what is happening in your relationship and what you both hope to change. Some areas we may work on include:
Communication & Conflict
Understanding what happens when conversations become difficult and finding ways to communicate without getting caught in the same arguments. This may include learning to express concerns more clearly and listen to one another differently.
Disconnection & Emotional Distance
Making sense of periods when you no longer feel as close as you once did. We can explore what may be getting in the way of connection and what each partner needs in order to feel closer and more secure.
Needs, Boundaries & Expectations
Creating more space for both partners to identify and communicate what they need from the relationship. This can include differences in expectations, boundaries, responsibilities, or ways of showing care.
Intimacy & Connection
Exploring changes in emotional or physical intimacy and the experiences that may be contributing to them. Counselling can provide space to talk about these concerns openly and work toward greater connection.
Trust & Relationship Ruptures
Working through experiences that have affected trust or changed how you relate to one another. This may include a significant conflict, betrayal, or another event that has left the relationship feeling unsettled.
What You Might Hope to Get From Couples Counselling
Couples come to counselling with different goals. You may want to stop having the same arguments, feel closer to one another, rebuild trust, or simply understand each other better.
Depending on what brings you in, couples counselling may help you:
Communicate more openly and effectively
Understand recurring conflicts and what keeps them going
Express your needs and concerns more clearly
Feel more heard and understood by one another
Reconnect after a period of distance
Navigate disagreements without becoming stuck in the same cycle
Rebuild trust after a difficult experience
Develop a stronger sense of connection and partnership
Make decisions about the future of your relationship with greater clarity
The goal is not to determine who is right or wrong. It is to create space to understand what is happening between you and consider what you both want for the relationship.
What to Expect
Your first session is an opportunity to talk about what brought you to counselling and what you both hope will be different. We will spend time understanding the concerns you are bringing in and getting a sense of the relationship from both perspectives.
As we continue, sessions may involve talking about recent conflicts or difficult interactions, looking at recurring patterns, and creating opportunities for each partner to express what is important to them.
Some conversations may feel easier than others. Couples counselling can involve talking about things that have been difficult to discuss on your own, and there may be moments of discomfort as you work through them.
You do not need to agree on everything before coming to counselling. You also do not need to have the same goals or perspective on what is happening. Part of the work can be understanding where each of you is coming from and identifying what you would like to change.
Is Couples Counselling Right for You?
You do not need to be in a crisis to seek couples counselling. It can be helpful when you notice that the same difficulties keep coming up, you are feeling less connected, or you are having trouble working through something together.
It can also be useful when your relationship is generally strong but you are entering a new stage of life or want support navigating a particular challenge.
If you are unsure whether couples counselling is the right fit, that is okay. Reaching out can be a first step toward understanding whether counselling could be helpful for your relationship.
